Overview
A product description explains what a product is and why it’s worth purchasing. You can use the product description to give customers important information about the features and benefits of the product so that they’re enticed to buy.
Information about a product can be:
- Above the product level — Shared by multiple products and variants. Examples include details about the product collection, type, or vendor, a store-wide sale notice, a shipping & returns policy, and trust badges.
- At the product level — Specific to the product and it's variants.
- Below the product level — Specific to a variant.
Without Descriptions Studio, you need to give all three levels of information in the single Description area on the product details page in your Shopify admin.
If you give information that's above the product level, then you need to copy and paste that information into the description of every product, and update it in every description if it changes.
If you give information that's below the product level, then that information shows for all variants, and it may be irrelevant or inaccurate depending on the variant that's selected.
With Descriptions Studio, you can use the product's Description area purely for information that's at the product level, and reusable snippets for everything else.
Installing and activating
To get started, you first need to install Descriptions Studio through the Shopify App Store.
After the app is installed, you can view and use it from the Apps page in your Shopify admin.
To use the app on your online store, activate the Descriptions Studio app embed in your current theme.
After the app embed is activated, you can create snippets and show them on your product pages.
Creating snippets
Snippets are reusable pieces of content that can be assembled to extend or replace your product descriptions. They allow you to easily show and manage information on your product pages that's above the product level (shared by multiple products and variants), and below the product level (specific to a variant).
We recommend that you read through the snippets article to learn more about what snippets are and how you can use can use them to extend and build your product descriptions.
After you've learned about snippets, you can create a new snippet.
By default, a new snippet shows on all product pages on your online store, but you can change the snippet details and add snippet conditions to control exactly where the snippet shows and which products or variants it matches.
As you start to think of your product descriptions as collections of modular information, you'll discover new and innovative ways to assemble them using snippets, and you'll be surprised at how powerful, flexible and time-saving snippets can be.
