Snippets

Snippets are reusable pieces of content that can be assembled to extend or replace your product descriptions.

They allow you to easily show and manage information on your product pages that's above the product level (shared by multiple products and variants), and below the product level (specific to a variant).

Snippets:

• can be a single sentence or image, an entire product description, or anything in between
• eliminate the need to copy, paste, and maintain content across multiple products
• allow you to show variant-specific content when a variant is selected
• replace the functionality of dozens of other apps, including apps for variant descriptions, stock notifications, sale notifications, trust badges, and sizing charts

Snippets provide a single location for content that's shared by two or more products. Changes to the content are made in the snippet instead of across tens or hundreds of separate product descriptions.

For example, suppose you want to show a PDF download link for this year's product catalog below the description on every product page.

You would need to copy and paste the link into every product description. When next year's catalog is released, you would need to edit every product description to update the link URL.

Instead of doing all of that work, which is time consuming and has the potential for inconsistency (some products might be missed, causing the link to be incorrect or even not show at all), you could place the link in a snippet and set the snippet to show on all product pages.

Next year, you would update the link in the snippet and it would instantly change for all products.

Content

A snippet can be as short and simple as a single line of text, or as long and detailed as an entire product description.

Snippets can contain text, links, images, videos, tables, and more.

Location

A snippet can show above or below the product description, or it can replace the product description entirely.

You can use the snippet's advanced settings to show the snippet in any HTML element on the page.

Show content on all product pages

You can use a snippet to show content on all product pages.

For example, you can show:

• trust badges
• a 'holiday sale' notice
• a 'shipping & returns' policy
• a product catalog PDF download link
• a 'low stock' notice when a variant's inventory is below a certain amount
• an 'additional shipping charges' notice when a variant weighs more than a certain amount
• the SKU of the selected variant that updates when variants are selected

To show content on all product pages:

1. From the Descriptions Studio app, go to Snippets.

2. Click Create snippet.

3. On the snippet details page, enter a Name and Content for your snippet, along with additional details.

4. Under Shows for, select All products and variants.

5. Click Save.

Show content on some product pages

You can use a snippet to show content on some product pages based on conditions.

For example, you can show:

• a list of features for products that offer the same features
• a benefit for products that provide the same benefit
• a sizing chart for products that have the same sizing
• a 'hazardous materials' notice for products that contain hazardous materials
• vendor information for products that are from the same vendor
• collection information for products that belong to the same collection

To show content on some product pages:

1. From the Descriptions Studio app, go to Snippets.

2. Click Create snippet.

3. On the snippet details page, enter a Name and Content for your snippet, along with additional details.

4. Under Shows for, select Some products or variants.

5. Add conditions to match products or variants.

6. Click Save.

Add a variant description to the product description

You can use a snippet to add a variant description to the product description.

If the snippet conditions match one or more variants, then the snippet shows when the matched variants are selected.

To add a variant description:

1. From the Descriptions Studio app, go to Snippets.

2. Click Create snippet.

3. On the snippet details page, enter a Name and Content for your snippet, along with additional details.

4. Under Shows for, select Some products or variants.

5. Add conditions to match one or more variants.

6. Click Save.

Replace the product description with a variant description

You can use a snippet to replace the product description with a variant description.

If the snippet conditions match one or more variants, then the snippet shows when the matched variants are selected.

To replace the product description:

1. From the Descriptions Studio app, go to Snippets.

2. Click Create snippet.

3. On the snippet details page, enter a Name and Content for your snippet, along with additional details.

4. Under Shows for, select Some products or variants.

5. Add conditions to match one or more variants.

6. Check Hide product description when the snippet is showing.

7. Click Save.

Build modular descriptions

You can use multiple snippets to build modular product descriptions from pieces of content that are relevant to numerous products.

For example, suppose you have a succulent plant product with the following description:

Only a small part of the description is specific to the product. The rest could apply to other succulent plants, all plants, or even all products in the store.

Instead of having to copy and paste each piece of general content into every relevant product description, and then update that content in each description anytime it changed, you could build the description using snippets.

The structure could look like this:

The product description on your online store would look the same whether it was constructed with snippets or entered entirely into the product's Description area, but the snippets make the content easier to add to multiple products, easier to update across products, more flexible, and more consistent.
